Our Story
LeadingDog was born from a simple but frustrating truth: it is remarkably hard to find truly great dog gear in the UK.
We are dog owners ourselves. Over years of walking, training, and adventuring with our dogs, we experienced first-hand how the market had been flooded with cheaply made leads, collars, and harnesses that looked the part but failed the moment they were needed. Snapped clips. Fraying webbing. Buckles that gave out on the second walk. Sound familiar?
The Moment Everything Changed
The turning point came on a trip to America. We discovered Mendota — a small American company quietly making handcrafted rope leads and collars with a level of care that simply did not exist on UK shelves. We bought a leather collar for our Doberman. Four years later, it is still going strong.
When we returned home with a new puppy and went looking for something comparable in the UK, we found nothing. We bought a cheaper alternative and went through three sets in as many months. That was the moment we decided to do something about it.
We began importing Mendota to the UK — giving British dog owners access to the handcrafted quality that had won us over on the other side of the Atlantic. That was how LeadingDog started, and it has shaped everything we have done since.
What We Believe
We believe that good dog gear should last. It should perform on muddy trails, in cold water, and on early morning runs just as well as it does on a Sunday stroll. It should be built from materials that age well, not fall apart at the first sign of real use.
We are not interested in stocking products because they are cheap or trending. Every brand we carry has earned its place through genuine quality, independent testing, and a track record we can stand behind.
